How do I keep AI agents working when a model provider goes down?

Have a second model or tool set up and tested before you need it, and keep your prompts and handoff notes in a format any model can read. When a provider is down, pause jobs that depend on it, move the urgent ones to your backup and resume the rest when service returns.

1. Know which jobs depend on which provider

List your agents and the model each one uses. Mark which jobs are urgent and which can wait a few hours.

This tells you what to move first when something breaks.

Include tools that use a model behind the scenes, like a writing assistant or support inbox. They can stop working at the same time.

2. Set up a backup before you need it

Pick a second provider or tool and make sure your account works. Run a small real task on it so you know how it behaves.

Outages are a bad time to create accounts and learn a new tool.

3. Keep prompts portable

Store your agent briefs and instructions in plain documents, not only inside one tool. Then any model can read them.

Different models may need small tweaks. Note those next to the brief.

Keep project files, notes and data in places you control, like your own repository or drive. Then switching tools does not mean losing context.

4. Check the provider's status page

Most providers publish a status page. Bookmark the ones you use, so you can tell an outage from a problem on your side.

5. Have a simple outage routine

Pause jobs that depend on the provider. Move urgent jobs to the backup. Tell your team which jobs moved.

When service returns, review what the backup did before you switch back.

Write the routine down in a few lines and keep it with your job list. In a stressful moment, a checklist beats memory.

Questions

Do I need more than one AI provider?
If your business depends on AI jobs every day, a tested backup is wise. For occasional use, waiting out an outage may be fine.
Will a backup model give the same results?
Not exactly. Models differ, so check the backup's work more closely at first.
How do I know if a provider is down or it's my setup?
Check the provider's status page and try a small request from another tool or device.
